The Name's Golightly, Love

Johnny Golightly.

Who is Johnny Golightly? My virtual persona, which I began roughly three years ago, is a tribute to Holly Golightly--a character famously portrayed by Audrey Hepburn. She is the main character of "Breakfast at Tiffany's", what many consider a film classic.

For those of you who haven't seen the film (rent it!), Holly Golightly is a broken woman. She is originally a woman from rural America who escapes to the big Apple. She left behind a husband and his children to come explore the city and become her own woman, or so she thought. Holly is controlled by a desire to escape her past. She lusts after money, success, and men in order to fill a void she so desperately hopes to fill. Until she meets "Fred", her upstairs neighbor. Fred understands Holly because they have experiences one another can relate to.

By the end of the film, Holly has to face her fears from the past and her loneliness in order to free herself and begin her future.

We live in an age where people are afraid to share their experiences for fear of judgment, shaming, etc. As an adolescent, I spent much of my time trying to escape the things from my past I could not control. I chased money, status, and all of these things I have grown to dislike--precisely for what they do to people.

Johnny Golightly fits because my virtual persona allows me the freedom to share my innermost thoughts in a place where I feel comfortable, a place where I feel safe. Now, as a young adult, I recognize that my past will only control me if I allow it to. Like Holly, it took several rude awakenings to finally begin down a path that works for my life and where I want it to go.

"So darling, how do I look?" :)
